Lane

“Madness, as you know, is a lot like gravity, all it takes is a little push.”

–Joker

“When can I see you?” I ask the moment she answers the phone. It’s not as sweet as it sounds. My desperation to see her is purely physical today. I know I said we should slow down, that I wasn’t using her for sex—and I fully meant it at the time. But that was before I realized two cold showers and three dates with my hand couldn’t squelch the desire I feel for this woman.

Either I purge myself of this craving by allowing myself to have her, or I do the only other thing I know will obliterate all passion inside of me—begin another hunt. I don’t typically work so soon after a kill, and I know it’s not a good idea. Thus the early morning call.

Ember sighs softly. “You can’t,” she says, her voice full of unconcealed disappointment. “I have someone coming over. I kind of forgot about it last night. You distracted me.” There’s a smile in her voice at the end.

“This person coming over—it wouldn’t be your boyfriend, would it?” I question. She makes a noise, sounding insulted, but I think it’s an important inquiry.

“No. Do you really think I’d have gone out with you or let you do any of the things you’ve done to me if I had a boyfriend?”

“I don’t know you well enough to say for sure. If I remember correctly, we never covered that topic. Actually, we never got to acquaint ourselves beyond the carnal introductions.” I know I’m being a dick, but I’m frustrated, both physically and mentally. If I can’t see Ember, then I know what I’m doing today, and I don’t think I’m up for it. Not yet.

“Wow, Lane. You suck, you know that? I’m not the type of girl that messes around on her boyfriend. I’ve been cheated on—recently—and I know how much it hurts. I’d never do that to someone else. And if you honestly believe I’m that kind of person, then maybe you—”

“Ember, shut up. I’m sorry. I don’t think you’re that kind of person. I’m in a pissy mood, and I took it out on you. Again, I’m sorry.”

“Did you just tell me to shut up?” Her words come out rushed and almost indecipherable.

“That’s all you got from that?”

“No, I heard all of it.”

“Then shut up, and accept my apology.”

“Hm. Well now I’m just extremely focused on all the ways you might be able to shut me up.”

I chuckle, enjoying the seductive tone her voice has suddenly taken. “Are you flirting with me?”

“Absolutely.”

“That’s not a good idea,” I warn her.

“Oh? Why not?”

“Because I’ve had a hard-on all night that won’t go away,” I growl. “All I can think about is the way you taste, the way you smell, how you feel in my hands… The sounds you make when you come haunted my dreams. And now you tell me I can’t see you today. My restraint—hell, my sanity is walking a thin line, and I’m ready to fucking break, Ember.
